Microsoft Windows 10X - A New Version of Windows?
Last night's event hosted by Microsoft was full of exciting hardware announcements. But there was also revealed something quite important on the software side, a new variant of the Windows 10 operating system, called Windows 10X.
Contrary to the name, it's not an operating system designed to work on the Surface Pro X, it's just a name match. Instead, it's designed more for devices like the Surface Neo, with numerous optimizations made specifically for dual-screen devices. And like that device, it will not make its appearance on the market too soon.
But in addition to these optimizations, it comes with plenty of other enhancements designed for devices that don't have much processing power or massive battery capacity. Windows 10X is intended to be an easier version of the operating system, but without sacrificing functionality.
We're not talking about Windows 10S here, which couldn't use applications outside the Microsoft Store. It is a complete operating system, but modular, or rather, compartmentalized.
The basic component of the operating system, which allows a device to work, is separate from applications that will each run in their own container. This solves potential security problems, and the component responsible for the operation of the applications is loaded only when necessary, reducing the consumption of resources. Indeed, it has the security advantage of Windows 10S, but retaining the ability to run programs from anywhere, not just what they UWP from the Microsoft Store.
The operating system will be available for dual screen devices, which is its main purpose. So you can expect to see it coming for such laptops in the coming years. On the phone side, however, Microsoft has opted for Android.
