The Premier of Quebec Criticizes Bitcoin Mining
Cryptocurrency mining activities are not very well seen in different locations around the world. One of the main reasons why digital currency mining is criticised is linked to the high energy consumption that such activities suppose.
Quebec's Premier does not support bitcoin mining
Apparently, the province of Quebec makes no exception from this point of view. The Premier of Quebec, Philippe Couillard, has criticised the bitcoin miners who are trying take advantage of the cheap power that they can find in the province.
The fact that Couillard made such a comment is not shocking at all. In fact, the utility company of Quebec, Hydro-Quebec, has recently issued a warning, saying that electricity costs could be increased for people conducting mining activities, trying to make it clear that the cheap power might not be available to companies which engage in mining in the province.
One of the main arguments that Couillard has brought to discussion when it comes to cryptocurrency mining was linked to what is the contribution of this activity to the local economy. Couillard said during a conference in Montreal:
“If you want to come settle here, plug in your servers and do Bitcoin mining, we’re not really interested. There needs to be added value for our society; just having servers to do transaction mining and acquire new bitcoins, I don’t see the added value.”
Of course, this does not mean that Couillard excludes everything related to cryptocurrencies. In fact, he claimed that he is open to the idea of companies creating "a real eco-system or a real technological transformation centered on blockchain."
Quebec has until now been on the radar of cryptocurrency miners because of the low energy cost, the renewable energy options and the climate, which has of course led to an increase in the number of cryptocurrency mining operations willing to benefit from area.
